Wallpaper Removal & Wall Preparation in Cairns and Surrounding Areas

Old wallpaper can completely change the appearance of a room, but removing it properly is often much more involved than simply peeling it off the wall.

At Painting and Maintenance FNQ, I provide professional wallpaper removal and wall preparation for repaintingthroughout Cairns, the Northern Beaches, southern suburbs, Port Douglas, Mossman and surrounding areas.

Please note:I currently providewallpaper removal and preparation for painting only. I am not currently installing or applying new wallpaper.

Professional Wallpaper Removal

Depending on the age of the wallpaper, the adhesive used and the condition of the wall underneath, wallpaper removal can range from relatively straightforward to a much more detailed preparation job.

Older wallpaper can often leave behind:

  • Adhesive and glue residue

  • Torn paper backing

  • Uneven or damaged plasterboard surfaces

  • Small dents, cracks and imperfections

  • Previously patched areas

  • Poorly prepared surfaces from earlier renovations

Removing the wallpaper is only the first part of the job. Proper preparation afterwards is what helps achieve a smooth, professional painted finish.

Removing Wallpaper Glue and Residue

After the wallpaper has been removed, the wall surface needs to be thoroughly checked for remaining adhesive.

Depending on the type of glue and the condition of the surface, walls may be washed using Sugar Soap or a suitable trisodium phosphate (TSP) based cleaner to help remove adhesive residue, grease and other contaminants before further preparation.

Cleaning products are selected to suit the existing surface, and the walls are properly rinsed where required and allowed to dry before further preparation, priming or painting.

Painting directly over wallpaper glue or contamination can cause adhesion problems and can affect the appearance of the finished wall.

Wall Preparation After Wallpaper Removal

Once the wallpaper and adhesive residue have been removed, the walls are carefully inspected.

Depending on their condition, preparation may include:

  • Washing and cleaning

  • Scraping loose material

  • Sanding

  • Filling dents, cracks and damaged areas

  • Repairing damaged plasterboard surfaces

  • Sealing problem areas

  • Applying a suitable primer or undercoat

If wallpaper has been installed for many years, the surface underneath can sometimes require considerably more preparation than expected.

The aim is to create a stable, smooth and properly sealed surface before the finishing coats are applied.

Quality Primers and Paint Systems

I use trusted professional products from Dulux, Dulux Professional, Dulux Precision and Berger, with the exact system selected according to the condition of the walls and the requirements of each job.

Where necessary, specialised primers and sealers from the Dulux Precision range can be used to help seal difficult, damaged or previously contaminated surfaces before repainting.

Finishing coats are selected to suit the room and surface, using quality Dulux and Berger paint systems for a durable and professional finish.

Using the correct primer, undercoat and finishing paint is particularly important after wallpaper removal because the underlying surface can have different levels of porosity, previous repairs, adhesive residue or staining.

Why Proper Preparation Matters

Painting directly over wallpaper glue, torn backing paper or damaged plasterboard can result in poor adhesion, uneven texture and visible defects through the finished paint.

Good preparation helps provide:

  • Better paint adhesion

  • A smoother wall finish

  • Reduced risk of peeling or bubbling

  • More consistent paint coverage

  • A cleaner finished appearance

  • A longer-lasting repaint

Preparation is one of the most important parts of any repainting project, particularly after wallpaper removal.

Wallpaper Removal as Part of an Interior Repaint

Wallpaper removal can be completed as part of a larger interior repainting project.

After the wallpaper is removed and the walls are properly cleaned, repaired, sanded, sealed and prepared where required, the room can be repainted using a suitable professional paint system.

Every property is different, so the amount of preparation required will depend on the type of wallpaper, adhesive, wall condition and previous work carried out underneath.
