Commercial Painting in Atherton – The Reject Shop Refurbishment

Painting & Maintenance FNQ recently completed a commercial painting project in Atherton, Far North Queensland, as part of the refurbishment of The Reject Shop retail store.

The project involved repainting large internal wall areas, structural columns, back-of-house doors and an existing fire exit door.

With other refurbishment works taking place at the same time, careful planning and protection of newly installed surfaces were essential.

The painting works were completed over four days, helping prepare the premises for the next stage of the refurbishment.

Commercial Painting During a Retail Store Refurbishment

Unlike residential painting, commercial refurbishment projects often involve working alongside other trades and around newly installed fixtures.

At The Reject Shop in Atherton, sections of the store had already received new wall panels and other finishes before painting commenced.

These surfaces needed to be carefully protected to prevent paint overspray, splashes and accidental damage.

We covered the newly installed wall panels with protective plastic film and carefully masked surrounding areas before commencing the painting works.

This preparation allowed the existing surfaces to be repainted without affecting the new fit-out.

Preparation and protection

Repainting Large Commercial Wall Areas

One of the main components of this project was repainting the extensive upper wall sections throughout the retail premises.

The existing green and yellow branding was retained, while the surrounding wall areas were repainted to provide a cleaner and more consistent appearance.

Structural columns were also repainted to complement the refreshed interior.

For the main wall areas, we selected Dulux EnvirO₂ Low Sheen, a very low-VOC, low-odour interior paint.

Why Use Low-VOC Paint in Commercial Buildings?

Choosing the appropriate coating system is an important consideration for commercial interior painting.

Low-VOC paints can help reduce paint-related emissions during application and drying compared with conventional higher-VOC alternatives.

Dulux EnvirO₂ also offers low odour, making it a practical choice for indoor commercial environments.

Using this product allowed us to achieve a professional finish while selecting a coating with improved environmental characteristics.

Back-of-House and Fire Door Repainting

The project also included repainting existing back-of-house doors and a fire exit door.

The doors had older, worn finishes that no longer matched the appearance of the refurbished premises.

Before repainting, the surfaces required preparation and application of a specialised undercoat suitable for the existing coating.

The doors were then finished in white using Dulux Aquanamel Semi Gloss, providing a clean and durable finish.

The transformation was particularly noticeable around the fire exit, where the original brown doors were repainted to complement the surrounding white walls.

Care was taken around the existing door hardware and emergency exit mechanisms.

Completing Commercial Painting Within a Refurbishment Schedule

Time management is particularly important when commercial painting forms part of a larger refurbishment.

Other trades may be working on different sections of the building, and painting needs to be coordinated with the overall progress of the project.

For this Atherton retail refurbishment, the painting works were completed over four days.

The project demonstrated how careful preparation, appropriate coating selection and an organised approach can help deliver commercial painting works efficiently.

The Finished Result

The completed painting works provided a fresh appearance throughout the retail premises while retaining the store's established colour scheme.

The newly painted walls, columns and doors complemented the wider refurbishment and helped prepare the premises for its next stage.
